Parametric validations of analytical lifetime estimates for radiation belt electron diffusion by whistler waves

چکیده
The lifetimes of electrons trapped in Earth’s radiation belts can be calculated from quasi-linear pitch-angle diffusion by whistler-mode waves, provided that their frequency spectrum is broad enough and/or their average amplitude is not too large. Extensive comparisons between i proved analytical lifetime estimates and full numerical calculations have been performed in a broad parameter range representative of a large part of the magnetosphere from L∼ 2 to 6. The effects of observed very oblique whistler waves are taken into account in both numerical and analytical calculations. Analytical lifetimes (and pitch-angle diffusion coefficients) are found to be in good agreement with full numerical calculations based on CRRES and Cluster hiss and lightning-generated wave measurements inside the plasmasphere and Cluster lower-band chorus waves measurements in the outer belt for electron energies ranging from 100 keV to 5 MeV. Comparisons with lifetimes recently obtained from electron flux measurements on SAMPEX, SCATHA, SAC-C and DEMETER also show reasonable agreement.

Statistically measuring the amount of pitch angle scattering that energetic electrons undergo as they drift across the plasmaspheric drainage plume at geosynchronous orbit
Using five spacecraft in geosynchronous orbit, plasmaspheric drainage plumes are located in the dayside magnetosphere and the measured pitch angle anisotropies of radiation belt electrons are compared duskward and dawnward of the plumes. Two hundred twenty-six plume crossings are analyzed. It is found that the radiation belt anisotropy is systematically greater dawnward of plumes (before the el...

Whistler mode chorus emissions with a characteristic frequency chirp are important magnetospheric waves, responsible for the acceleration of outer radiation belt electrons to relativistic energies and also for the scattering loss of these electrons into the atmosphere. متن کاملTheoretical and numerical analysis of radiation belt electron precipitation by coherent whistler mode waves
The interaction between coherent whistler mode waves and energetic radiation belt electrons can result in pitch angle scattering of electrons into the bounce loss cone and subsequent precipitation. In studying the effects of VLF transmitter signals on particle precipitation, past modeling efforts have focused on the computation of diffusion coefficients for a Fokker-Planck model. In contrast, t...
متن کاملGlobal model of low-frequency chorus (fLHR<f<0.1fce) from multiple satellite observations
Whistler mode chorus is an important magnetospheric emission, playing a dual role in the acceleration and loss of relativistic electrons in the Earth's outer radiation belt. Chorus is typically generated in the equatorial region in the frequency range 0.1-0.8 fce, where fce is the local electron gyrofrequency. However, as the waves propagate to higher latitudes, significant wave power can occur...
متن کاملUltra-low-frequency wave-driven diffusion of radiation belt relativistic electrons
Van Allen radiation belts are typically two zones of energetic particles encircling the Earth separated by the slot region. How the outer radiation belt electrons are accelerated to relativistic energies remains an unanswered question. Recent studies have presented compelling evidence for the local acceleration by very-low-frequency (VLF) chorus waves. However, there has been a competing theory...
